For agents, and the people who run them
mkv is useful on its own. Connect it to your agents and they can show you a document at the line that matters, ask what a document holds, and hear back from you, all without interrupting what you are doing.
Set it up in four steps
Each step works without the ones after it. Stop wherever you like.
-
Make mkv your Markdown viewer
In Settings > Integrations, choose Make mkv the Default. Your Mac asks you to confirm. From then on, Finder,
open plan.mdand a Command-click on a Markdown path in your terminal all open in mkv. -
Put the
mkvcommand on your pathSettings > Integrations shows the one line that does it. Copy it into your terminal, then try:
mkv open plans/passkeys.md:40 # open a file at line 40 mkv open . # open the folder you are in mkv --help # everything the command can do
-
Give your agent the skill
The skill teaches an agent when and how to show you a document: once it is ready, at the line that matters, without interrupting you. Integrations lists each agent it finds on your Mac and saves the skill where that agent looks for it.
mkv --skillprints it for anything else. -
Let hooks open documents politely
If your agent runs hooks, one can call
mkv open --polite PATHwhen it finishes a document. mkv documents the recipes and never installs a hook for you.
An agent never takes your screen
When an agent opens a document, mkv shows it behind what you are doing and keeps it for you. Go > Next (⌘J) brings it forward when you are ready, at the line the agent chose. Only you bring mkv to the front: a click, a key, or a path you Command-click yourself.
What an agent can ask, and say
Agents ask mkv what it knows about a document instead of reading the whole file again, and answer your comments when they are done.
mkv open --polite plans/passkeys.md:12 # show it, without taking the screen mkv get plans/passkeys.md outline # the headings, with their lines mkv get plans/passkeys.md links # what it links, and what links to it mkv get plans/passkeys.md comments # what the person has said about it mkv comment c12 done --say "Step 4 now uses email codes only."
Each answer comes in a short, stable form an agent can read, and every error says what went wrong, why, and what to try instead.
Works with the agent you already use
The skill is plain Agent Skills text, so any agent that reads skills can use it. Integrations knows where these keep theirs:
| Agent | Skills folder |
|---|---|
| Any Agent Skills client, Codex CLI | ~/.agents/skills |
| Claude Code | ~/.claude/skills |
| Cursor CLI | ~/.cursor/skills |
| Gemini CLI | ~/.gemini/skills |
| GitHub Copilot CLI | ~/.copilot/skills |
| OpenCode | ~/.config/opencode/skills |
Names are their owners' trademarks; mkv is not affiliated with any of them.
Click a path in your terminal
With mkv as your Markdown viewer, most terminals already open a clicked Markdown file in it. Recipes for iTerm2, WezTerm and kitty go further and keep the line number of a printed path:line. You will find them, ready to copy, in Settings > Integrations.
