Privacy

mkv collects nothing about you. It has no account and no analytics, it connects to the internet only if you ask it to load a web image, and your documents never leave your Mac.

In effect from 28 October 2026.

The app

mkv reads the Markdown files and folders you choose and shows them to you. It does not send them, or anything about you or your Mac, anywhere. It contains no analytics, advertising or tracking code, and makes no network connections of its own. The one exception is yours to make: images on the web that a document shows are loaded only if you choose Load Remote Images, and then straight from the address the document gives.

To work, mkv keeps a few things on your Mac, inside its own container, which only it can read:

  • your settings, such as the theme, the zoom and whether Follow Changes is on;
  • the folders you have opened, as bookmarks macOS gives it, so it can open them again;
  • where you were in each document, and copies of documents as you last saw them, so Changes and Since you looked can show what is new;
  • comments you write, so it can show them and hand them to the agent working on that document, on your Mac.

Read Aloud uses the voices built into macOS, on your Mac. Deleting mkv deletes all of this.

Purchases

Purchases are made through the Mac App Store and handled by Apple under Apple's privacy policy. We never see your payment details. Apple gives us totals of sales by country, never who bought mkv.

Email

If you write to us, we use your address and message only to answer you, and we keep them only as long as we need to, or as the law requires for business records. We never add you to a mailing list.

This website

This site sets no cookies. It counts visits with Fathom Analytics, which uses no cookies and keeps no personal data (we see totals of page views, referrers and countries). Apart from the Fathom script it loads nothing from other sites: its type comes from your own computer. It keeps two things in your browser's local storage, and nowhere else: your choice of light or dark, and the date you last read the changelog, so new releases can be marked. You can clear both by clearing this site's data in your browser.

Our web host keeps standard server logs (addresses and pages requested) for security, for a short time.

Children

mkv collects no information from anyone, children included.

Your rights, and changes to this policy

You can ask what we hold about you (usually nothing, or an email you sent us) and ask us to delete it. If this policy changes, the new version will be here with its date, and the changelog will say so.
